having always been a sbd man i was recently recomended to give a Grateful Dead audience show a go. i downloaded hampton 1st may 1981 and it is stunning.perfect quality and just awesome to hear the crowd reacting and just loving it.

what other audience shows would people recomend. what are the essential/shit hot quality/loads of crowd response audience shows to go for.

i am interested in all years but would love to hear some more audience shows of this quality.

on some of the sbds i have you can clearly hear the crowd going nuts as they break into something like Dark Star or Morning Dew. to hear this on an audience recording must just be amazing.

i realise that these same questions probably get asked all the time but peoples time and suggestions are really appreciated!

I would reccomend any of the Aud tapes from Red Rocks 82 and 83. Awesome sound quality that you can only get from a good day at the rocks

The second set from Alligator Alley 11/29/80 has long been a favorite of mine. Perfect quality AUD and the set itself is phenomenal. Check out the Shakedown > Franklin's and The Other One -- smokin'!

08-06-1971 is considered the best pre-75' audience copy...

05-01-1981 is outstanding...

03-13-1981 is also a good audience (not as good as 05-01)

Great crowd reactions...12-15-1986 (virtually every song, especially Touch of Grey), 09-03-1988 (they encore "Ripple" and the crowd wigs out), regarding good dews to hear on aud, check out 09-18-1987 or 09-09-1993 (ends show on Dew and crowd explodes...)

Ultramatrix was a soundboard with an miked audience line in the mix (87-90)...there's a few of these floating around (06-08-1990 is one)

I'll get back to this thread later with some good audience source shows...

Look in the mid 80's for recordings by the "Oade Brothers". Unbelievable sound quality that really captured the "feeling" of the arena that evening. There are nights I get chills when I listen to 'em.

More of a SBD guy but these AUDs have been treating me pretty well...

3-3-68...the classic Haight Ashbury show/ monster Viola but quality is good for its age, not the best.
5-3-69...Great sound, monster Other One BUT vocals are very faint. Try it out, it actually sounds pretty cool! (and yes...its reported to NOT be a SBD)
11-8-70...above average sound considering its age, great acoustic set along with some nice rarities!
8-6-71...as mentioned above CLASSIC, possibly best AUD of early 70's.
7-21-74...nice crowd reactions, solid playing, typical 74.

May or may not be the best shows from the period but they do put a smile on my face :)

Tapers with excellent track records that you might want to check out:

Jerry Moore (74 thru 77)
Barry Glassberg (78 thru 81)
Steve Rolfe (79 thru 81)
Oade's (84 thru 86?)

There are some great bk/schoeps/AMS soundfield recordings in 1990-1994, but venues have a big effect, that is, the aud's captured the sound faithfully but unless they are pretty FOB you may not like that. Check some of the MSG or Boston Garden runs for possibilities.

Also, 12/18/1993 had a great FOB.

^^^ good job with the info...

other good aud's are 03-09-1981 (awesome show), 04-20-1983 is very crisp, 06-18-1983 is definitely worth a listen, 03-29-1990 (classic show is on both a great sbd and aud), 06-18-1993 (great FOB recording), 06-22-1993 (most Deer Creek auds are good)...

Greek Theatre (84-87) and Red Rocks (78-85) shows typically have some good audience copies available...

Good call on the 3-9-81 Strat, that and the following night were some of the best audience recordings I'd ever heard at that time. I remember dubbing my friends' cassettes of these shows back in the summer of '81 and thinking I'd found the holy grail.
